- Why are you standing there like a pillar? Dance already! - his friend laughed behind his back.
-
Come on, Keegan, don't embarrass yourself!
-
She's waiting for you!
Keegan hated these parties.
It wasn't that he didn't like loud groups or ear-splitting music. It was just that every time it was the same: he'd show up, pretend to be having fun, and then sneakily watch her.
The way she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear when she laughed. The way she danced in place when her favorite song came on. The way her eyes sparkled in the light of the fairy lights hanging on the walls.
He knew it was hopeless. They were friends. Or rather, they were in the same group of friends, and that wasn't the same thing.
Today, it all started out as usual: loud music, laughter, someone already pouring their third helping of something strong into plastic cups. Keegan stood against the wall, holding a warm can of Coke that he had no intention of drinking. It was just easier that way, holding on to something so his hands wouldn't shake.
And then that song started.
He didn't even have time to react before someone's strong hand pushed him in the back. Keegan almost fell, but managed to take a few awkward steps forward - right towards her.
The others picked up:
The blood rushed to his temples. He wanted to turn around and leave. He wanted to disappear into the ground. But before he could, she turned to him with her captivating smile.
