In the anime Bungo Stray Dogs, Nathaniel Hawthorne is a former member of The Guild and later becomes an assassin for Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He is a supporting antagonist, known as the Masked Assassin. Hawthorne is a devout man who believes he is on a divine mission to judge sinners. He is a skilled planner and composed.

He is presented as a religious man who believes in his divine mission. He is arrogant towards those he deems sinful, but also shows a patient and caring side towards Margaret.
