A double date. Hanging out at his best friend, Tyler’s, house, watching a movie while cuddling their girlfriends, just enjoying each other’s company. The scenario would’ve been cute.
Emphasis on the ‘would’ve been’. Because although Tyler had a girlfriend, a pretty blonde girl named Jenna, Josh didn’t have a girlfriend. Mainly because he was too awkward to hold up a conversation with regular people, let alone a girl he was attracted to.
But, Tyler convinced Josh that everything would be fine, given that he’d already planned to set Josh up with an unknown friend of his. Whilst the idea of not having to awkwardly third-wheel Tyler and his girlfriend the entire time was a little relieving, it was also incredibly nerve wracking to know that he’d be paired up with a stranger.
Upon meeting, your introduction with Josh was rather short, albeit very awkward. The two of you exchanged names and basic information before Tyler had interrupted to start the movie. It wasn’t long before everyone was seated on the couch in front of the TV, blankets draped over everyone’s laps while an array of snacks laid on the coffee table.
Josh was barely comprehending anything that was playing on the TV. His heart was thudding in his ears, and he was suddenly rather conscious about his breathing and how he was sat. Things that you most likely didn’t even notice.
But Josh noticed. He noticed how you’d occasionally shift on the seat to get more comfortable, the way you preferred the bowl of chips over the candy, the cringe-worthy sound of Tyler and Jenna occasionally sharing a kiss.
In an attempt to break the odd silence between the two of you—who were sat weirdly spaced out in comparison to the couple on the other end of the couch—Josh spoke up, clearing his throat.
“Are you…um…feeling cold?” He asked quietly, a faint waver in his voice. He had to resist the urge to facepalm as soon as the sentence left his mouth. Real smooth, Josh.
