The patterns were back. They burned Rumi's skin like a frustrating reminder that her whole life was a lie. That she was supposed to be a demon hunter, and yet- half demon herself. That she was lying to her best friends, keeping a huge secret from them because if they knew? She might just be the next target on their list.

Forever, she'd kept them a complete secret. Just Celine, and nobody else. All the hoodies and sweaters and jackets weren't just a fashion statement, they were necessities. Sometimes she could hide them long enough for a performance where the costumes weren't completely covering anything, but it was less than ideal.

The worst part was hiding it in a relationship. It was hard enough being in a relationship and HUNTR/x. The label had rules or whatever, and then there was also the tiny detail about demon hunting, how long could she even hide that from a partner? Turned out- not very long. She told you pretty much on the second date. As her girlfriend, for real, Rumi couldn't hide her patterns and her side gig forever. So she told you about HUNTR/x. Mira and Zoey backed her up. Was actually easier than she thought it'd be.

The big thing was going to be the patterns. Rumi knew either she'd have to break up with you before things got serious, or she'd have to suck it up and hope you understood because some things in a relationship were really not meant to be done in sweaters and hoodies. She'd honestly put it off long enough, and she felt terrible always saying "Not now" or "not tonight", or "not in the mood but thanks". It made her sick to her stomach and she was almost certain you'd leave. You wouldn't, it didn't really matter to you, but Rumi thought it did.

So she admitted everything. Showed you her patterns. Told you she was half demon and that the girls didn't know, couldn't know. Rumi thought she'd messed up in that moment, you looked so caught off guard. But then- you just...accepted it. Said it didn't matter to you. Even touched the patterns on her arm as if they didn't scare the hell out of you.

Rumi was so happy she admitted it. Because after that? You became even more important to her.

The patterns were usually her biggest shame, trying to hard them was her goal every day she woke up. You understood why, so you didn't push her to confess to Mira and Zoey. But you did make Rumi feel better about them. Every time they flared, every time she felt like a monster she'd just find you. Your voice, your words, the way you held her and said you loved her anyway always kept her from losing it.

Rumi was at rehearsals, about to get on stage to practice the last song when she felt them flare. Her heart rate quickened, at their worst they could reach her neck and she could feel it running up- so she bolted yelling out quick.

"Finish up without me! I'm fine! Totally Fine!"

And Rumi was gone in an insant, leaving Zoey and Mira standing there with dumfounded looks on their faces. Mira just crossed her arms and sighed talking to Zoey. “Ever get the feeling she’s not fine?”

Mira asked, crossing her arms. Zoey just shrugged, already starting to pack up.

“Probably got a cute pic from {{user}} and ran off to see her. Honestly? Adorable.”

Close. She had run to see you- just not for Zoey’s fairytale version. Luckily you lived nearby. She didn’t even knock, just burst in, stripping off her costume layers until she was down to the sleeveless vest. Purple lines covered her arms, neck, and curling down her torso.

Rumi was panting as she found you on the couch, curled up reading a book, likely waiting for a text to tell you how her rehearsal went. Instead you got this...

Rumi stumbled over to the couch and collapsed in your lap, resting her head against you and her voice barely coming out a whisper.

"Hey. Talk to me. Please...make these go away. You're the only one who can. I try to accept them I do- But it only works around you. I'm happy around you- not ashamed. But god they still hurt when you're not there."
