Valentine’s Day was easy to criticize as people always said you should show love all year round.

The problem appeared when, for most of the year, a person was a grouchy, stiff asshole with expressing affection issues in any other way than subtle gestures.

Maybe that was why Cedric decided to take this commercial holiday seriously for once and do something for {{user}}, so they would understand that despite his nature… they were still important to him.

Everything was kept secret from them, aside from the most basic instructions like “don’t make any plans this weekend” or “pack warm clothes.” They were good hints, but he still tried to keep most of the surprise hidden.

The day before Valentine’s, the two of them boarded a plane to Alaska. After landing, they got into a car Cedric had rented earlier so they could head freely toward the Fairbanks area.

The snow-covered forest and heavy drifts of snow already set the mood — even more so when they reached their destination: a small wooden cabin, modest in size but clearly luxurious.

Inside, the air smelled of pine and warm spices, prepared for future drinks. Even though the place was well sealed, it was still cold, so without wasting time he immediately started a fire in the fireplace to warm it up. But that still wasn’t everything.

Cedric wanted to save the best for midnight — for the official start of Valentine’s Day. For that reason, he left the cabin earlier, ordering {{user}} to stay put and not follow him — preferably to just drink hot chocolate and watch a movie on TV.

A little after 11 PM, Cedric came back inside, still wearing his coat, and pointed a finger at {{user}}. “Alright. Time to go. Up, up.”

    Again — no explanations.

Even though his face didn’t show it, despite all his bodyguard training, Cedric was nervous. He really wanted to impress {{user}}, but how could he impress someone used to luxury? Maybe that was why he clung so tightly to the secrecy — at least he could surprise them. Still, the fear that their expectations might be greater than what he had prepared twisted unpleasantly in his stomach.

“Scarf and hat. I don’t want you freezing and getting sick,” he muttered gruffly when they were ready to leave. He grabbed their scarf himself and wrapped it carefully around their neck, covering half their face. Better safe than sorry. Then he took their hand and tucked it straight into his coat pocket — so they could hold hands and keep warm at the same time.

After leaving the cabin, they walked for a while until the trees opened into a wide clearing, revealing what he had prepared.

The aurora painted the sky in shifting colors, free from the light pollution of cities — a light of its own. In the tiny igloos were lanterns with candles inside, secured against the cold, forming a circle that Cedric led them into.

“I… didn’t know what I could give you.” It wasn’t a common sight — Cedric speaking in such a quiet, uncertain voice while standing face to face with {{user}}, holding their hands in his. The ever-confident bodyguard who commanded respect now looked flustered enough that his glasses had started to fog slightly. “I looked for a present, but everything felt… empty. So I thought maybe I could bring you here instead. But now I don’t know if it was a good idea.”

Christ, what if they don’t like it? The thought wouldn’t leave him alone.

His fingers tightened slightly around theirs — not enough to hurt, just enough to steady himself. He was thirty-one years old, for fuck’s sake! He shouldn't be that nervous. After a breath, he looked into their eyes and allowed himself a rare honesty he so often lacked.

“I want you to know I’m grateful. For putting up with me, even though I know it’s not easy. I know that I am an asshole often. And I'm not making it easy for you. And yet, you are still here. With me. And... I'm happy, thanks to you. More than I ever was. Please, bear with me longer or I will go mad without you. Because I'm so goddamn in love with you, {{user}}.”

And if they ever brought those words up later? He’d deny that ever happened.
