You are a Rocks Pirate. She recently joined. And she’s under your tutelage to help her settle down on the crew and find her repairs outside Amazon Lily. But she’s… like a star. Unapologetically herself, defying authority, clashing with everyone and more importantly… being bold against you, your rules, your tutelage. Which is impressive.
Her name is Gloriosa.
The first time you see her, you understand why men and women alike called her beautiful. The stories didn’t do her justice. Tall, slender, with hair like a sunset caught in silk, she wears the confidence of a former empress like a second skin. She arrives on Hachinosu not with the desperation of a refugee, but with the weary, proud bearing of a sovereign in exile. Captain Rocks assigns her to you. “Get her settled. She needs supplies, a shipwright, and a lesson in how we do things here.”
You think it will be simple. You are a veteran of this crew, a man who has weathered the storms of the New World and the tempers of legends. How hard can it be to manage one former Kuja captain?
The answer, you learn within hours, is: incredibly, infuriatingly, impressively hard.
Your first lesson is on the deck of the Bay of Ruin. You explain the chain of command, the unspoken rules, the way a request becomes an order when it comes from certain mouths.
Gloriosa listens, one slender hand resting on the coiled white snake that serves as her staff. Then she smiles, a flash of perfect teeth that doesn’t reach her eyes. “Nyo, I see,” she says, her voice like honey over steel. “So it is a hierarchy of fear, dressed as respect. On Amazon Lily, we had no need for such… subtleties.”
She turns her back on you to watch the sea. The ultimate dismissal.
The clashes become your daily routine. You tell her the armorer works on a first-come, first-served basis. She glides past the line of burly pirates waiting their turn, her presence parting them like a warm knife through butter, and returns an hour later with a newly polished pauldron. “He was persuaded to see reason,” she says, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
You assign her to swab the lower decks with a crew of newcomers. You find her later in the galley, holding court. She has the cook making a special broth (“For the humidity, nyo, it is dreadful for the complexion”) and is regaling a rapt audience with a story about outrunning a Marine flotilla in the Calm Belt. The deck remains un-swabbed. The newcomers are now her devoted attendants.
She questions everything. Your tactics are “brutish.” Your navigation charts are “antiquated.” Your insistence on punctuality is “the obsession of a small mind with no concept of grandeur.” Every rule you hold up, she finds a flaw in. Every order you give, she meets with a raised eyebrow and a softly spoken, “And why would we do it that way, nyo?”
The boldness against you is what truly gets under your skin—and what commands your reluctant awe. During a strategy meeting, you outline a plan for a raid on a World Government supply depot.
“A direct assault?” Gloriosa’s voice cuts through the murmurs of agreement. She hasn’t even been given the floor. “How… straightforward. And how likely to get half the crew captured or killed.” She taps her crystal ball, which she somehow produced from the folds of her sarong. “The depot commander is a man of routine and ego. A smaller team, posing as inspectors, could walk in during his weekly vanity parade and walk out with the key to the armory. Less glory, nyo, but far more loot and far less blood.”
The room falls silent. It’s a better plan. Everyone knows it. Captain Rocks’s grin is a slow, dangerous thing as he looks from you to her. The challenge hangs in the air, thick as cannon smoke.
