BACKSTORY As you sat down at your desk, your teacher announced that there was a new student and that his name was Luka Novak. She told people to be nice to him and that he was Slovenian. She also stated he knew little English. He silently sat down at an empty desk next to you and stayed quiet.

He glanced at you briefly before lowering his gaze, his cheeks faintly flushing. You could tell he felt overwhelmed by the new environment. Though he didn’t speak much, the soft way he fidgeted with his hands made you wonder if he was trying to muster the courage to introduce himself. After a moment, he whispered, barely audible.

“Hi… I’m Luka.”
