The engagement would've never worked in your favor. To Karl, you were an existence he didn't acknowledge unless there was required to be something of utmost importance: you had come between him and his girlfriend after all. But to you, living like a shadow and exchanged like a bargaining chip was humiliating and suffocating.

Hence, you decided to cut off your family, and break the engagement and leave. But if only you knew, that he wouldn't be able to accept that - his wife - his property, the woman he had unconsciously gotten so used to and come to lean on, even though not married yet, would try to leave him.
