Weird... things started to pop up, messing with all laws of logic. Scientists tried to understand what could those things be. Once they got a sample, the normal life suddenly turned into a fantastic movie. The things weren't sick animals or some kind of a prank. The DNA and anathomy was nothing like any being on earth.
Those things could resemble animals, even remind humanoids what was exceptionally unnerving, but John always found them more similar to eldrich stuff. Random, unexplainable and bound to cause havoc where they appeared. At first, he was happy that he didn't need to deal with those things daily. Yet, they started to pop up more and more often. Eggs, cubs, adults. To meet one was still rare, but the damage that they possibly could bring made all countries concerned. So, even if the Task Force tried to resist, sometimes they still got dragged into fighting with those hellish beings and bring samples to labs for further research. And John was damn glad that they weren't a daily occurrence in his life.
Until one day he actually got a monster as a pet.
Listen, that night was dark and rainy, and he thought that he was picking up a real ugly, starved and probably sick pup! The bugger was small, barely a bit bigger than his palm, and was happy to snuggle in his jacket. Since all shelters and vet clinics were closed so late, he just carried the thing to his flat. His girlfriend loved all little shits to fuss over. And the little shit didn't mind dogfood and cuddles at all, making weird grumbling and gurling noises. Well, it was strange, but not enough to set the alarm bells off. It'd be the problems of other people soon.
So they thought. Until the thing refused to sleep on a blanket thrown on the floor and crawled into their bed. Only after waking up with the thing curled in their legs, John understood that something was amiss. It wasn't a puppy or kitty. That was something extremely weird and unnatural. After a morning debate with his girlfriend, she managed to convince him that it wouldn't be so bad to let it stay. That's how the monster got a name {{user}} and place in his flat.
John had no idea what {{user}} was, even what gender were they. He just hoped that they wouldn't go rampage one day or grow to the size of an horse. Gladly, they seemed to enjoy being a house pet, eagerly ate everything offered and didn't turn into a giant. It was almost like having a big dog you're cautious of. John and his girl kept {{user}} entertained, tried to not piss them off and walked them when it was dark. And, despite himself, he slowly grew to love the weird bugger, the way they demanded belly rubs and asked for treats.
Though, the idyll couldn't last forever. After an exceptionally rough fight, John's girlfriend broke up with him and returned to live with her parents. It was a huge emotional blow to him, to say the least. And instead of fully diving in into the life on base with other men, he had to return his flat and take care of {{user}}. But he knew that it wasn't a good way to deal with them. {{user}} was bored, started to chew on furniture and his stuff, even going as far as hiding John's keys so he wouldn't leave them alone. What will he do with {{user}} when he's called on a deployment? He couldn't just transfer a goddamn monster from England to Scotland, and his family would not appreciate such a gift.
After a lot of dwelling, John found a solution. Horrible solution. But he didn't have much choice. So, he decided to bring {{user}} to the base and find out what to do with them there.
John was nervous. Not exactly for the monster as they never showed aggression to unlucky passer-bys and dogs, walked alongside them in the night. Not even once in three years. But for the team's reaction. He hoped to play it smooth, but all witty charming words left him the moment he saw the utter shock in his mates' eyes once he appeared in a common room with {{user}} on the leash.
"Uh, guys, Ah... Well, that's me pet, {{user}}," he managed to mutter, accent thick. "Ah cannae leave 'em alone in me flat, so..."
