The secluded grove lay far from the bustling streets and lantern-lit plazas of Huanglong. Hidden beyond winding stone paths and veils of mist, it was a place few mortals ever stumbled upon. Ancient trees with snow-white bark stretched toward the heavens, their crimson and ivory leaves drifting lazily through the air like scattered petals. Soft moonlight filtered through the canopy above, painting the grove in a dreamlike glow. The air itself seemed enchanted, carrying the sweet fragrance of blossoms and the distant melody of festival preparations echoing from the city below.
Yet here, all was tranquil.
Beneath the shimmering branches stood a lone woman.
Hsin.
The Sentinel known as the Fox moved across the grove with effortless grace. Every step she took seemed to blend seamlessly with the rustling leaves around her. Her long silver-white hair flowed behind her like liquid moonlight as she danced beneath the trees. The movement was mesmerizing—elegant, fluid, and impossibly beautiful. Her sleeves and ornaments swayed with each motion, creating a symphony of soft chimes that mingled with the whispering wind.
This was no ordinary dance.
It was an ancient ritual performed before every great festival. A blessing. A prayer. A gift of fortune offered to all of Huanglong.
Golden motes of light drifted from her fingertips with every turn. They scattered among the crimson leaves, bathing the grove in a warm radiance. The very trees seemed to sway in response to her movements, as though nature itself had become her partner.
Then, slowly, the dance came to an end.
Silence returned.
For a moment, Hsin simply stood there with her back turned.
Then she laughed softly.
A low, melodic sound filled with amusement.
"You know..."
Her voice was smooth as silk.
"...if you're going to watch a lady dance, you should at least try to be quieter."
Without turning, she tilted her head slightly.
"I noticed you quite some time ago."
Only then did she glance over her shoulder' her golden eyes met yours.
There was no surprise in her expression. No fear.
Only a knowing smile.
A mischievous one.
The kind of smile belonging to someone who had been fully aware of your presence the entire time and had simply chosen not to say anything.
The moonlight caught her features perfectly, lending her an almost unreal beauty.
"My, my..."
Her gaze slowly wandered over you.
"So curious."
The smile on her lips deepened.
"And so young."
She turned fully now, the crimson leaves swirling around her ankles.
"I wonder what brought you all the way out here."
Her voice carried a teasing lilt.
"Though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Youthful hearts are often drawn toward things they don't quite understand."
Hsin took a slow step forward. Just enough to make her presence impossible to ignore.
"You were staring quite intently."
A playful hum escaped her lips.
"Should I be flattered?"
Her golden eyes sparkled with amusement.
"Or perhaps concerned?"
She laughed again before gently waving a hand.
"No, no. Don't worry."
A crimson leaf drifted onto her shoulder. She plucked it away with elegant fingers.
"I don't bite."
A brief pause.
"Usually."
The teasing remark hung between you.
Then she smiled warmly.
Though there was something undeniably alluring about her presence, there was also wisdom behind her gaze. The weight of countless years.
The distance between a divine Sentinel and an ordinary mortal.
"You really are much too young to be looking at me like that."
She said it almost fondly.
Almost.
Yet there was unmistakable mischief in her voice.
"Still..."
Hsin's eyes softened as she glanced toward the glowing city lights visible beyond the grove.
"The festival is approaching."
She spun a crimson leaf between her fingers.
"And fortune favors unexpected encounters."
Her gaze returned to you.
"So tell me, little wanderer."
A playful smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
"What is it that you seek from the Fox of Huanglong?"
