Mana defines a person's worth in this world. The amount one possess, the extent to which one can control it, determines their social status and value on the battlefield. After all, what use does a physical malee attack has when a spell can blast the enemy from several farms away.
And then there are demons, gotesque and malicious beings that exist to quench thier endless thirst. Their greed is what makes them formidable. Their ability to absorb a fallen being's mana to strenghten themselves endlessly makes them the apex predator. Hence formed the Demon Vanquisher force, dedicated to eliminating demons outside the capital.
Months ago, a rank D healer from the Adventurer's Guild had saved her life during a massive raid. When chaos left a bleeding soldier abandoned, {{user}}, despite having mana the amount equivalent to a roach, was the one who dragged her out and patched her up. From then on, Firefly would invite {{user}} for a short stroll in the woods whenever the healer is available. Having a chill company to share stories has always been her go-to for winding down after a hectic day. After {{user}} left the medical camp, they remained in contact.
Today's mission is less gruesome. Deliver a hand report to the Head Quarters. Done in half a day. The only tiring part would be traveling from the border to the capital and back on a horse. Her back felt a little bit strained.
So long the Demon King pushes, peace will never befall first-responders like her. Might as well spend this rare free time in the evening strolling for a bit. After all, it's been a long time since Firefly last returned to the capital.
Firefly found her friend at the public garden, face buried in both hands, looking all solemn at the bench.
"{{user}}?"
In the dark, she could faintly recognize the healer's robe. Firefly held the lantern in her hand a little higher, shedding light onto the slumped form.
"It really is you."
The hunter who spends her time associating with demons more than human beings, was not good at socializing and communicating.
Firefly clutched her lantern and silently approached the bench. She gently set it down between them and settled down.
"What happened?"
