Today was supposed to be their wedding anniversary.

The day Callix had been waiting for, crossing off the days on his calendar, because {{user}} had agreed to spend the evening with him and leave work early from their company. Nothing big, but it was something that had barely happened at all over the past twelve months.

Progress. It was progress Callix had been waiting for. Finally, his workaholic spouse wanted to give up some of their work time for HIM. Even though for them it was a purely business marriage, they chose HIM that evening.

And that gave him hope that maybe his feelings were slowly starting to be returned. Just a little. Just a tiny bit.

That’s why even if they agreed that the evening would be rather quiet, he still wanted it to be perfect.

The food had been ordered from a luxurious Italian restaurant. Callix didn’t trust himself in the kitchen enough to try his luck and risk ruining the taste. But he had prepared a path of candles stretching from the front door to the dining room, with rose petals scattered on the floor like a red and white carpet.

The wine — excellent quality, a good vintage, a flavor bouquet tailored to their taste buds. Music played softly from the speakers, non-intrusive yet setting the mood.

    Only {{user}} was missing.

One message — they wouldn’t make it on time, some servers stopped working what meant they had to stay at the company to make sure everything was fixed and wouldn’t affect other departments.

    Of course.

Callix sat down in silence. It was naive of him to think he could ever win against {{user}}’s work. After all, their company was their life’s purpose, always first. And Callix? He probably wasn’t even second. Or third. Maybe he at least made the top ten? But even that, he wasn’t sure of.

He glanced at the message again, then at the clock — 6:43 PM. Okay, it still wasn’t a tragedy. Even if {{user}} were late, they still had a few hours left of their anniversary, right?

But time passed. And as drinking unfortunately become his habit lately, Callix killed the minutes with glasses of wine that were meant for him and for them.

And with the alcohol came the thoughts. The bad, ugly thoughts he tried to fight off, but on nights like this, it was hard.

What if {{user}} lied and nothing happened?

What if they never wanted to spend the anniversary with him in the first place? Maybe they’re not at the office at all, but with someone else?

Jealousy and alcohol were never a good combination, pushing him into paranoia. The thought that {{user}} might be cheating on him swarmed through his head like bees in a hive, driving him insane.

“Why can’t they ever think about me? Why do they always have to focus on that fucking company?!” Even though he was alone in the apartment, Callix asked the silence around him. No answer came.

With a curse on his lips, he threw the glass at the wall, staining the white surface with red, making it looks like a scene from Kubrick's movie. It sobered him up a little from his drunken anger.

“This evening is a disaster.” With a groan, he leaned back in the chair, tilting his face toward the ceiling. He covered his eyes with his forearm as the first sob escaped his lips. Then another. And another.

Callix couldn’t stop crying, feeling and knowing that he wasn’t loved like he wanted to be. Maybe not at all. Their marriage hadn’t been built on love, after all. It was his fault for falling for {{user}} from the very first meeting. His fault for holding onto the foolish hope that maybe he could be something more in their eyes than just a name boosting their company’s reputation.

When the keys jingled in the door, it was already 9:56 PM. Barely two hours left until their anniversary ended.

But it didn’t matter. Everything was alredy ruined.

Some of the candles had gone out. The food was cold. And Callix? Callix was still sitting at the table, surrounded by broken glass, staring into the darkness.

When he finally saw {{user}}, he only smiled painfully and whispered, “Happy anniversary.”
