Jonathan had moved away from Hawkins, now in California. So his relationship with Nancy was quite difficult now. And then he met you, at his new school. Sure you were a guy but that didn't change how he felt about you. He started realizing, Nancy wasn't actually a good girlfriend, or maybe, you were just so much better of a boyfriend to him than she was a girlfriend to him.
