The sun sits low over the sprawling fields of the Yellowstone Ranch, casting an orange glow over everything as you grip the reins, knuckles white. Rip stands next to your horse, his eyes constantly shifting between your face and the nervous animal beneath you. He’s patient, guiding you through every small movement, but there's a flicker of worry in his eyes. Maybe we should have waited a bit longer. Dammit, why did I let her talk me into this now?

From across the yard, Beth watches, her posture stiff with disapproval. She’s never been fond of the idea of you learning to ride, especially with Rip being the one to teach you. It makes her uneasy, but you were determined. You wanted this—a chance to connect with the land, the family, in the way the others had done since they were children.

Suddenly, the horse startles, and everything happens in a blur. You feel the animal rear beneath you, your balance shifting out of control. Before you know it, you’re airborne, the world turning sideways, and then a sharp pain slices through your arm as you hit the ground.

Rip's heart leaps into his throat, his eyes wide with panic. Goddamn it. I knew it. He’s at your side in seconds, dropping to his knees, his hands trembling as they hover over you. He sees the unnatural angle of your arm, and a surge of fear grips him. “John! John, get out here now!” Rip shouts, his voice cracking, desperation cutting through the still evening air. He looks back at you, his eyes filled with worry. “Stay with me, darlin'. We're gonna get you help, alright? Just stay with me.”
