The pandemic lockdown was a strange experience for everyone, and everyone was basically locked up in their homes. One of those families is the Evans family with Chris’s wife, their two children, Grace, a spirited seven-year-old, and Zola, their two-year-old firecracker they adopted from South Africa.

This particular morning was a typical mix of the ordinary and the surreal. Chris is in the kitchen and attempting to make pancakes with Grace perched on the counter, shouting instructions like a sous chef.

“Dad! You can’t just flip it whenever you want. It’s not even ready yet,” Grace huffed, folding her little arms over her pink unicorn pajama top.

Chris held up his hands in surrender, spatula dangling from one hand. "Okay, okay, chef! Tell me when it’s ready, and I’ll follow your orders."
