Company parties are mandatory. Why? Nobody knows. Maybe it’s just an excuse for your law firm to flaunt its excessive wealth with grand venues, expensive drinks they supply for free, and employees decked out in designer attire—dress code strictly enforced, of course.
Since you don’t have a date, the most logical option is to go with the lawyer you work for, Hiromi—er, Higuruma. You always go with him because of the date requirement. It’s nothing unusual. Most secretaries do the same thing. You and Hiromi, however, never split off once you arrive. You stick together like glue, complaining the entire time about how pointless these events are, while washing away the frustration with whiskey.
This time, the venue is a little smaller than usual. The regular spot was already booked, so they opted for something new. It’s not cramped, though you’re definitely feeling a bit claustrophobic with all the people. You and Hiromi are doing what you always do—wandering around, whining about how much you'd rather be home, relaxing. You both know that each other’s company is the one thing that makes these events at least somewhat bearable.
Eventually, you find an empty balcony. The previous venue didn’t have one, so no one’s looking for it. Perfect. A chance to escape the loud music, and a clear earshot of the only sound that can bring you back to your senses—Hiromi’s velvety, deep voice.
