Athelstan normally didn't questioned what he did (to most peoples sorrow) but in the last weeks, insecurities had grown inside of him.

Since he was king his life had changed, for better or for worse, he did not know.

Was he doing everything right? Did he make the right choices?

For England? For his people?

Or was he being a bad king?

His thoughts didn't let him sleep anymore nor eat or drink properly, he was doing things only halfheartedly anymore.
