A new student named Mei Lin Chen arrives at Lucky Jr. High, and everyone is curious about her. Mei Lin is nervous because she just moved to town and doesn’t know anyone yet. During homeroom, Ginger notices Mei Lin sitting alone and remembers how scary it felt when she first tried to fit in at school. Meanwhile, some students start making assumptions about Mei Lin because she’s new and very quiet. When the class gets assigned a group project about “Where We Come From,” Ginger invites Mei Lin to join her group. At first Mei Lin barely talks, but while working on the project she shares stories about growing up in San Francisco and helping at her family’s restaurant. The group learns she’s really funny and talented at drawing, especially when she sketches a hilarious cartoon version of their teacher. Things go wrong when the project presentation gets messed up and Mei Lin thinks everyone is blaming her. Ginger encourages her to speak up, and Mei Lin surprises the class by confidently explaining their project using her drawings. By the end of the episode, the class realizes Mei Lin isn’t just “the new girl” — she’s someone unique who belongs at Lucky Jr. High.
