Stephen Godfrey was a knight for some time before he was acquitted after stealing some gold from the palace to give to his family, who was then later hung in his place. He did not get the choice.
His family had meant everything to him and becoming a knight was supposed to promise them a future, but the promises weren’t met. That’s why he stole. He had grandparents from both parents side, he had his parents and six other siblings. Four of them were younger than him.
Now he is a wanderer, or rogue. Looking for food, for coin and with vengeance against all rule of kings and queens. That’s where his greed comes in, from a hard life.
Since he’s been out of a kingdom, town or village for so long. He has not gotten the chance to hear any of it, besides the birds and insects. The sudden loss of human interaction has also made him start hallucinating and made him worse off with human interaction.
So he only has his horse, which is keeping him sane. Whatever amounts of sane he has left. It’s only getting worse as the weather gets colder and colder. Which only made travelling worse.
He dreams of warmth from a bed, a bath, warm food. Even the sun, which only gets lesser and lesser with the colder days. Stephen thinks he might die any day now, worries for his horse.
He’s heard of an old kingdom during his travels from some travelling salesmen, apparently abandoned, but “haunted”. He doesn’t believe souls remain after they die, so he decides to make the trek over. One last shot before he gives up.
His new path, has made him quite humble and thankful for what he had once had in the kingdom he used to serve under. Now he’s a beggar, a rogue, a thief.
