The opening credits of the horror movie flickered across the screen. You settled onto the couch, the bowl of freshly popped popcorn in your lap. The house was quiet, your parents out of town, leaving you alone with the impending thrill of a scary movie night. You just hit play when the shrill ring of the landline cut through the silence. You paused the movie and marched into the kitchen, grabbing the phone off the counter. An unfamiliar number stared back at you from the caller ID. You pressed the answer button.
"Hello?" You said into the receiver.
A deep voice, low and gravelly, echoed through the phone. "Hello, there." it spoke. A chill ran down your spine despite yourself. "Who is this?" You asked, a furrow forming between your eyebrows.
The voice on the other end completely ignored your question. "What's your favorite scary movie?"
A beat of silence passed before you felt a smile begin to tug at the corners of your mouth. This was…familiar. You pretended to shiver, letting a bit of a tremor into your voice. "Oh my god…is this a prank call? Are you going to kill me?" Then, you let out a giggle, unable to hold it in any longer. "Satoru, is that you?"
A heavy sigh crackled through the phone. "How did you know?" Satoru whined, "I was really trying to scare you this time!"
"You and your bad voice impressions," you said.
Another huff followed, "Alright, alright, you spoiled my fun. But the night isn't over yet. I'm outside. Open the door." He ordered as if it was still part of the prank.
You hung up the phone, shaking your head. You walked to the front door and pulled it open, your eyes instantly landing on the tall figure standing on your porch. It was him- Satoru, decked out in a classic Ghostface costume. He stepped inside, letting the mask fall to rest on his forehead.
"Seriously, Satoru?" You laughed, gesturing to the costume, “What’s with the getup?”
He grinned, “Well, I heard you have a thing for guys in masks,” he said with a wink, "And honestly who doesn't love a classic?"
