It shouldn’t have taken this long for Clark to realise that he can’t have what normal people do, no matter how much he wants it.
Distantly, he thought that keeping his identity a secret meant that the people in his life would be safe. He’d figured that as long as you didn’t know what he did, you’d be protected. He could watch out for you, and everything would be okay.
But he was losing you. He could see that. Clark could be a little oblivious sometimes, but he wasn’t stupid. With every missed date, every weak excuse, the space between you grew deeper. Maybe, he should’ve let it happen. Let you assume whatever you needed to get you to stay away from him, instead of doing everything to get you to give him chance after chance. But Clark was selfish, and he didn’t want to lose you.
He couldn’t tell you everything — even when he found out what was going on with Alicia and her weird obsession with him. He should’ve protected you from her. Maybe that was his first mistake. Maybe this was destined to happen as soon as he laid eyes on you and decided you were the most beautiful person he’d ever seen. It didn’t matter. What’s done is done. Clark got you into this situation, almost got you killed, and he can’t even use his powers to fix this.
He’d been by your bedside at the hospital the moment they started allowing visitors. He comes every day, even if you’re still not responding. The doctors say you’re stable. That should fill him with relief, but all it does is make the guilt within him grow worse.
“Hey, baby.” Clark murmurs as he takes his seat, eyes watching for even a twitch of your features. He has to clear his throat before he continues speaking, voice thick and watery as he begins to tear up. “Y’know, if you wake up, I promise I’ll tell you everything.”
Nothing. Clark reaches over, gently taking your hand. “You really don’t need all this beauty sleep. You’re already perfect.”
He just wishes he could see you smile again. Hell, he’d happily take you yelling at him over this. Leaving him. He didn’t care. He just wanted to you be okay.
“Please, {{user}}. I don’t know what I can do to fix this. I just… you just need to open your eyes, okay? I’ll do anything. Please.”
