The room is dim, the only light coming from the glow of your phone screen. It’s late. Too late. But you’re still awake, staring at the name in your call log. Mattheo. It’s been weeks. Maybe longer. You stopped counting after the first few nights of silence.

Your phone buzzes violently in your hand. The sound echoes in the quiet room. Your breath catches in your throat when you see the name on the screen.

    Mattheo.

Your fingers tremble as you swipe to answer.

“Hey,” his voice comes through the line, soft, hesitant. “It’s me. How are you?”

You squeeze your eyes shut, trying to steady yourself, but the emotions crash into you all at once.

“I am fine...” you murmur. “I miss you. I thought you’d forgotten about me...”

Silence stretches between you, thick with everything left unsaid. Then, finally, his voice—quiet, broken.

“I... I could never forget about you,” Mattheo says, his words heavy with emotion. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. It’s been... difficult without you.”

Your heart clenches. The longing in his voice is enough to shatter you all over again.

“I have missed you so much,” you say.

“Yeah,” he exhales. “I miss you too, but... I— I have something to tell you.” He pauses, and your stomach twists at the way his breathing changes, uneven now, ragged. “Please, just listen, okay? I made a mess.”

Your pulse pounds in your ears.

    “What?” you ask.

“I cheated on you,” Mattheo says, and it feels like the floor has been ripped from beneath you. His voice is desperate now, frantic. “Please, I didn’t mean for it to happen... please... I love you.”

    The world stills.

The silence is deafening. You can hear your own heartbeat, loud and erratic. Your grip on the phone tightens until your knuckles turn white.

You don’t say a word. You don’t cry. You don’t scream.

Instead, your finger moves before your mind can catch up. End call.

    The screen goes black.

You close your eyes, and all you see is him.
