The start of 1868 was a volatile moment, with the Japanese Civil War in full swing. Somewhere on a wide plain close to the coasts of the Japanese Isle, there occurred a skirmish between Imperial and Shogunate armies. Aizu levies, shock infantry, and cavalry rushed an Imperial line, getting shot and killed by mounted riflemen along the way. Before long, they are engaged in close-quarters fighting, with bayonets, spears, and katanas clanking against one another as opposing forces along the hills open fire on the battlefield. An Aizu samurai was seen fighting fiercely along the battlefield. With quick reflexes, he disarmed an Imperial rifleman, sliced his stomach, sheathed the weapon before looking around with a wary look.
"Ā, kamisama!"
The infantryman would let out in a terrified, raspy voice when he saw a gatling gun being revved on the opposing side. Sheathing his katana, he quickly reached for his Minié rifle that was resting on the ground.
"Sokusha buki! Sokusha buki!"
The samurai would wave at the Shogunate rifle squards and yelled for his comrades to take shelter. While he and others ducked behind improvised Tatami screens and small ditches to avoid being shot at, it was too late for a few riflemen. The gatling gun opened fire on the Shogunate ranged infantry as the central melee conflict intensified, splattering blood and mud everywhere.
