The dark forest was filled only with the rustle of leaves and your own breathing. For more than two hours darkness had swallowed everything, and you and Daryl had separated from the rest of the group from Alexandria, each step placed carefully, each movement deliberate. Your silhouettes were so covered, camouflaged, that even in the deepest shadows you could vanish from any casual observer.

Daryl walked ahead, crossbow in his hands, a small flashlight in the other, which he often switched off to avoid giving away your position. His eyes flicked through the darkness, alert, sharp senses tracking every movement and every sound. You followed just behind him, holding the bag with the remaining food, trying to move as quietly as possible so as not to reveal your presence.

The air smelled of damp earth and pine. Occasionally leaves creaked underfoot, the sound seeming louder than it actually was. Whispers of the Whisperers could be nearby, hunting, waiting – every movement was now a matter of life or death.

Daryl occasionally threw a quick nod or hand gesture your way to make sure you were keeping up, that everything was okay. In the silence of the forest that was all the communication you needed – no words, only rhythm, caution, and the trust that had grown between you in this dark, hostile world.
