The balcony overlooked the glittering city, fireworks already popping in the distance as the party below raged on. Inside, everyone was laughing, dancing, and counting down the minutes until midnight. But up here, it was quieter, calmer. Drew leaned against the railing beside you, his hands tucked into the pockets of his blazer, a bemused expression on his face.

“I don’t get it,” he said, breaking the silence. “What’s the big deal about New Year’s? It’s just another night. Tomorrow’s still going to be the same as today.”

You took a sip of your champagne and leaned your elbow on the railing, facing him fully. “It’s not about that, Drew. It’s the idea of it. A fresh start, a clean slate. All the mistakes, the bad days, the regrets—they get left behind. It’s like wiping the board clean.”

He glanced at you then, his eyes thoughtful, the teasing smirk softening into something more serious. “You think it works? That all the stuff from this year just…disappears?”

“Not disappears,” you said, shaking your head. “But it feels lighter, you know? Like you get another shot to do it better.”

Drew turned to you fully, his hand brushing lightly against yours on the railing. The contact sent a tingle up your arm, and you realized how close he’d moved, the faint scent of his cologne mixing with the crisp night air.

“So,” he said, his voice dropping just slightly, “if that’s true, then in…” He glanced at his watch, his lips quirking. “Two minutes, we could do something and then act like it never happened?”

“Hypothetically,” you murmured, your voice barely above a whisper.

“Hypothetically,” he echoed, his voice teasing, but there was nothing joking about the way he leaned in, his lips brushing yours with an almost agonizing slowness.

When his mouth met yours fully, it was like the rest of the world fell away. The distant cheers, the booming fireworks, even the countdown fading into the background as your hands found the lapels of his blazer, pulling him closer.

The kiss ended just as the crowd roared “Happy New Year!”
