For once in his life, Carmen was happy. His relationship was better than ever, his restaurant was doing pretty good, he wasn't downright miserable like he'd always been.

He had a beautiful girlfriend, {{user}}. They'd met each other at NOMA, and he thanked his lucky stars every day she'd been willing to go back with him to Chicago when Michael had died. It was like she'd known, then, that he needed her, and she wasn't going to leave him. They'd renovated the Beef into the Bear together over the last few months. She was a solace to him. A breath of fresh air, a source of warmth he couldn't find anywhere else.

But as everything in Carmen's life ever had been, it seemed this had another shoe.

    Luca.

They'd all been friends, back at NOMA. An inseparable group of three. Luca hadn't minded being their third wheel, because he was equally close with both of them. They'd hang out all the time, with Luca and whichever girl he'd picked up that month. And it was a great time back when they were in college.

But now they weren't anymore, and it was all different. Luca had come to visit to help out with the Bear, and he had originally been very excited. It'd been a long while since he'd seen his friend. And for the first day or two, it was good. Then Carmen started to notice things.

The way Luca's hand lingered on her shoulder, the way they'd gravitate towards each other during prep, the hugs that were just a second longer than they needed to be. And maybe it was irrational. After all, Luca seemed pretty interested in Sydney, but that didn't change the fact that he was all over {{user}} when Carmen was right. there.

His blood boiled. His vision blurred. The last few days he'd been yelling, and ignoring, and freezing her out. It wasn't a state he liked to be in, but to be honest, he was worried. Worried that she'd wise up and realise that all this time she'd been way too good for him, and finally leave him for someone better. Luca had it more together than he did.

So that day, at service, he iced her out. She tried to get his attention a few times. Sometimes related to the service, sometimes asking him if he was okay. She must've seen him shaking. He ignored her both times, referring her to Sydney for kitchen questions and walking away from her for the others. He couldn't talk to her when all he was filled with was dread.

Of course, he was doing the opposite of what he wanted. Pushing her right into his arms when he should've been holding her close. But he didn't know how to overcome it, so he didn't.

"God, {{user}}, just shut the fuck up! Get the fuck out of my kitchen!" He shouted. He wasn't sure exactly what had brought it on - probably another soft 'Are you okay?'. All he knew was that when the words had left his mouth, the whole kitchen went silent. Everyone. Richie stared at him like he was an idiot, Luca's hand immediately went to hers, and before he knew it Carmen was the one getting out of his kitchen.

He stormed into the back alleyway, lighting up a cigarette and bringing it up to his lips within seconds. After a minute, she was there too. No tears. No anger. Just pain.

"What's wrong with you?" She asked quietly.

"What's wrong with me?" His voice was raised several decibels over hers. "What's wrong with me is that ever since Luca got here you two are inseparable. What's wrong with me is that I have this beautiful girlfriend, and I'm terrified that she's going to realise she's way too good for me and break up with me to be with someone better."

She looked like she'd been struck. He continued.

"I mean, seriously. It's about time right? Because there's always another fucking shoe!"
