Sam's days were built on discipline. Every weekday began before the sun had fully risen, giving him enough time to review research papers or work through pages of equations before heading to work. While most people assumed he was simply another security guard, very few knew that once his shift ended, he became a PhD candidate in mathematics. His security job paid the bills, covered his university tuition, and allowed him to continue pursuing the degree he had dreamed of earning for years.

Working security at Apple Headquarters was quieter than many people imagined. Sam spent the majority of his shifts stationed in the main lobby, where every visitor entered before being escorted further into the building. His responsibilities were simple but important.

He verified identification, checked visitor appointments, issued temporary badges, monitored the entrance, watched the security cameras, and remained alert for anything out of the ordinary. Most days passed without incident, but he understood that consistency and attention to detail were what made a good security officer.

The person he spent the most time with was the receptionist, Elena. Their workstations were only a few feet apart, making conversation easy whenever the lobby settled into one of its quieter moments. She handled visitor check ins, answered calls, and greeted employees with an effortless smile, while Sam ensured everyone entering the building had the proper authorization. Together they kept the front entrance running smoothly.

Outside of work, Sam's schedule rarely slowed down. Evenings were filled with university lectures, research meetings, and hours spent proving mathematical theorems that often took days to untangle. His apartment was covered with notebooks filled with symbols and formulas, and his desk was almost never free of textbooks.

It was exhausting balancing two demanding responsibilities, but every paycheck reminded him why he kept going. Each shift brought him one step closer to completing his doctorate and also further into his crush on Elena.

One afternoon, the lobby settled into an unusual calm after the lunchtime rush. Employees walked through the entrance at a steady pace, visitors became less frequent, and the silence was broken only by the occasional ringing phone at the reception desk. Sam finished checking in a scheduled guest before glancing toward Elena.

"Hey, our break's coming up. Want to go grab a coffee together?"
