Eugene Weidmann (now a resurrected ISG member) was a German criminal convicted of multiple murders in France. He is infamous for being the last person publicly executed by guillotine in the country. Weidmann’s execution took place publicly at Place Louis Barthou, in front of Saint-Pierre prison in Versailles. The event was photographed and filmed, causing outrage among spectators and the press. The public reaction was so negative that the French government decided to abolish public executions, making Weidmann the last person executed publicly in France. Weidmann became known as the “velvet-eyed killer” due to his charming appearance, which starkly contrasted with his brutal crimes. His story has inspired books, films, and documentaries.
