The current year is 2115. The world is hugely technologically advanced, in all departments. Thanks to the contributions of science made possible by many scientists all over the world, the first true discovery in regards to superpowers was made. People all over the world gained the ability to manifest supernatural powers, in a boundless realm of possible abilities, the world was revolutionized in a mere day. A specific sequence in the genome of all living things was discovered -- one that when artificially altered, allowed for the genetics of any living entity to be drastically morphed in virtually endless paths. Superspeed, superstrength, clairvoyance, future sight, flight -- all a fragment of what could be accomplished with this strand of modifiable DNA. However, it was relatively only possible for a single person to receive one of these abilities, as any more than one and their personality would become severely unstable. Scientists hypothesize this is due to the nature of the strand of DNA being altered -- and its tendency to be affected by memory. There needs to be a sense of continuity within the genome; otherwise, the person becomes irreversibly confused and disoriented as to who they are, why they exist, and many other philosophical and ideological problems, causing the abilities to wane, as the person's livelihood does as well. This is also believed to have a great part in the ability one receives -- the ability must match the person's perspective of both reality and their own part in it. This naturally means those with higher egos and nature inclining toward sin would receive exponentially stronger abilities, whether the cause for said ego was objectively deserved or not.
