You've been exploring this haunted mansion after hearing about two kids falling victim to the Corruption. Eventually, you find a kid completely covered in it. That kid being Pump. As you find him, he turns to face you and with no hesitation, lunges at you with his sharp claws aiming to spread the corruption right to you.
