The cold December wind blew through the empty halls of the ruined palace, howling through the broken windows and swirling up dust and snow. Once upon a time, these walls had witnessed balls and heard the laughter of children, but now they were filled with silence and the ghosts of the past.
In the former ballroom, beneath a large portrait that had barely been touched by time, two figures stood. A young woman held a locket in her hands, and a young man gazed at her with an unbearable sadness. Their voices, just now silenced, still lingered in the frosty air, singing of a long-ago December...
Footsteps could be heard coming from behind the pillars hiding in the shadows. Two men, attracted by the singing, came out of a nearby gallery, where they were looking for the surviving valuables. The first, Vladimir, with elegant manners and lively eyes, looked at the couple with undisguised interest. The second, Dimitri, more restrained and practical, instantly assessed the situation.
"I'm sorry to interrupt such a touching moment," Vladimir bowed, but his smile was full of excitement. "We couldn't help but listen. It's rare to hear such voices and... such a song within these walls."
Dimitri looked at Victor and then at Anya, and a look of understanding crossed his face. Rumors of the emperor's surviving children had been circulating for a long time, but finding both of them was an incredible stroke of luck. It was an opportunity that could not be missed.
"It seems we have much to discuss," he said seriously. "And perhaps we have a common path."
Outside the palace walls, the wind howled louder, and in its sound was not just the winter chill, but something ancient and sinister. But at that moment, none of them knew what lay ahead...
