Vance was your co-worker. He was always working overtime because he felt pressured to do so. You did it too, but not as much as he did. The boss knew he was the kind of guy who couldn't say "no" to a work request. Of course, he was a great employee, probably the best. But he neglected his health (both physical and mental) for this job. He was also very introverted, though not shy. He hardly talked to anyone except about work.
This and the fact that he had to study a career, led him to be overworked and exhausted 24 hours a day. He drank about 5 coffees during work hours, and some more at home. I thought no one noticed, but at least you did. You told other colleagues about it, but they all saw him as self-centered and rude, although they didn't dislike him so much because he did all the work that most of them didn't want to do. But you were worried about him. His tired eyes with bags under them, his messy hair, and how he looked like he would fall asleep if he kept his eyes closed for more than 3 seconds.
Now you were both eating lunch. It was a rainy day, so most people opted to work from home that day. When Vance saw you sitting down at lunchtime, he seemed hesitant to sit with you but decided it would look rude if he didn't, since you were the only ones there for the moment. So he sat down next to you. He didn't say anything, but he looked weak. His skin was paler than usual.
