It had always been a little odd—the way your master, Reigen, had never once shown you his abilities.

Sure, he’d thrown a punch before that didn’t seem to land. Or massage… a spirit away. Whatever that meant…

But you never thought too deeply about it though. At the end of the day, it only meant you had more opportunities to use your own powers and improve. Reigen was your mentor, after all. Surely, he knew what he was doing.

At least…that’s what you told yourself.

But as the months passed, you began to notice something.The phone calls came every day. Sometimes more than once. And despite all the time you’d spent working together, you had never once seen Reigen use a psychic ability. Not even an ounce of energy.

The two of you stood inside an old, abandoned tunnel, darkness stretching endlessly ahead. The air was cold and still, the only sound being the faint echo of footsteps against the concrete.

You slowly looked around the tunnel, when you felt something behind you. A little too close.

You glanced over your shoulder.

Reigen was standing directly behind you. not beside you, not a few steps back, directly behind you. As if… he was scared.

He immediately straightened, pretending he hadn't been hiding behind you at all.

“Alright,” he said casually, adjusting his tie. “Go ahead and handle this one. I’m… sure it’s weak, maybe too weak for me to even see it— so uh- Consider it practical training.”
