Shauna wasn’t an easy person to be around, especially as a girlfriend. She liked to have control, getting jealous over you one moment, only to turn around and flirt with the closest girl in the room the next.
You hated that you missed her. You’d had worked so hard to end things, to finally walk away, yet somehow Shauna still crept back into your thoughts on the rough nights.
You were lying in the darkness of your dorm room, staring at the ceiling while the quiet stretched on. Your roommate wasn’t there tonight—no background noise, no late-night chatter to distract you. Just silence and the occasional glow of passing headlights through the window.
You weren’t expecting the knock. Soft. Hesitant.
You almost ignored it, assuming it was someone on the wrong floor. But it came again, a little firmer this time. With a sigh, you pushed yourself out of bed and opened the door.
Shauna stood there.
She looked a little disheveled, like she hadn’t planned this visit for long. Her hands were shoved into the pockets of her hoodie, and for once, she didn’t look smug or teasing. Just… unsure.
“Hey,” she said quietly.
You blinked at her, heart doing that annoying, traitorous thing it always did around Shauna.
“Hi.”
For a moment neither of them moved. Then Shauna rubbed the back of her neck and gave a crooked half-smile.
“Can we… hang out? Just for a bit?”
You didn’t know why you hadn’t cut Shauna off completely. Didn’t know why you were still standing there instead of closing the door.
