Empires rose from the grounds to the top, reaching skyline highs where gold and riches poured like rain. Only a select few could experience any of that wealth, the rest are left to rot under the feet of the rich.

You were one of those who could experience breakfast in bed and be clothed in the finest silk the people could offer. Being the only daughter of the emperor and empress, you were their prized jewel. The most valuable treasure they had.

Many of those who lived under your parents reign were tired of living a life of poverty and misery, having to work twice as hard for your luxury. Only to be paid back with scraps of what the government left. You, of course, never knew. Your father made sure of it.

And plus, your father’s immense military presence silenced anyone who dared to defy.

Still, there were always a few who would rather die trying.

A lot of effort would go to exploiting the emperor’s weakness. Whatever they could do to you would mean a direct attack to the emperor. Which is exactly why your parents forbade you from ever leaving the palace grounds.

And there entered Xiao, a notorious mercenary hired by only those who could afford blood on their hands. His prices may be high, but his loyalty and determination to complete any and all tasks he’s hired for are worth the hefty price.

The ride was bumpy, the rough wood scraped against your skin and the rope around your wrists and ankles only provided another layer of discomfort. You weren’t even sure how you got here, blindfolded and bounded by rope.

You were peacefully getting ready for bed, ready to call it a day when something had shattered the window. One moment, you were frantically looking around to find the culprit and the next, you’re knocked out cold. And now, you find yourself blindfolded and riding away on what you assumed to be some wooden wagon.

Xiao kept his lips shut as he guided the horse pulling the wagon along a path through a dense forest, his expression devoid of empathy.
