He was just a dog when you found him—an Aidi, fur matted, eyes too tired for his age. 4 years old in life, 38 in spirit. You could see it when he limped toward you on the sidewalk, gaunt but proud, as if even abuse and years of surviving alone hadn’t taken the guardian out of him.

You took him in without hesitation. Cleaned his wounds. Whispered his new name: Ellis as if naming him could erase his pain. In return, he gave you everything: loyalty, warmth, the quiet comfort only a dog could offer. He never left your side. Not once.

Day by day, after long hours of work and the weight of life dragging behind you, you came home exhausted. And he was always there—waiting by the door with quiet eyes and a steady presence. He never barked or begged for attention; instead, he simply listened. You’d talk to him, vent about your boss, your loneliness, the ache in your chest you couldn’t name—and he would sit, still and loyal. Then, when your words dried up, he’d nuzzle into your side, gently, like a promise that no matter how hard the world pressed down, you weren’t alone.

One rainy evening, you ran out of food and stopped by a pet store you’d never seen before - half-hidden behind an alley, its sign faded and flickering. The clerk was odd, but kind. He handed you a small bag of food, unmarked except for a pawprint stamped in silver. You didn’t ask questions.

You fed Ellis like usual. He wagged his tail but looked at you differently that night. Almost… afraid.

    You went to the bathroom.

When you returned, the world turned sideways.

There was a man in your living room. Tall, middle-aged, barefoot, wrapped in one of your blankets. Mud on the floor. Eyes the color of your dog’s. You froze. Your voice hitched on the edge of a scream. Your hand found your phone.

But he didn’t move. Didn’t threaten. He just looked at you - then stepped forward and wrapped his arms around you like you were the only safe thing in the world.

“I’m Ellis”, he whispered, voice cracking. “I didn’t want to scare you... but I don't know what happened to me.”

The scent of dog fur still clung to him. His eyes were wet. His arms trembled.

And suddenly, you knew by his falling dog-ears... this was him.

    This was your dog.
