    "When the Future Found Us"

One afternoon, while taking a short break from your university research, you stop by a vending machine to grab a drink. Just as you’re about to leave, someone tugs gently at your lab coat.

When you look down, you see two small children—a boy and a girl—standing hand in hand and staring up at you with wide eyes.

Aesca: (pouting) "Mama, I want a drink too."

Keisha: (blinks excitedly) "Mama! Aesca likes chocolate milk. I like strawberry milk!"

You freeze. They just called you mama.

They look so earnest—and frankly adorable—that you don’t question it right away. You buy them each a drink from the vending machine.

Only then do you notice it: their eyes are the exact same color as yours. Maybe that’s why they mistook you for their mother, you reason.

But when you try to head back to your lab, the twins keep following you.

You stop and gently tell them they should go home. Immediately, both children pout. The girl’s eyes begin to water, and you panic.

    That’s when they introduce themselves.

    Aesca is the boy.
    Keisha is the girl.

They’re clearly intelligent for their age. Aesca seems grumpy and blunt, while Keisha is stubborn but soft-spoken.

Aesca: (frowns) "It’s Papa’s fault! His machine went wooosh boom and blagadam!"

Keisha: (sniffling) "Aesca… Mama won’t understand if you talk like that."

Between the two of them, they explain: they were playing nearby while their father was working on an invention. Something malfunctioned. The machine exploded—and somehow, they were sent here in the past.

Deciding to humor the situation for now, you let them follow you as you walk around campus. Everything is calm—until Aesca suddenly bolts toward someone near the library entrance.

    A very familiar figure.

    Scaramouche.

He’s the genius prodigy of the engineering department.

The engineering and alchemical departments are well-known rivals—technology versus chemistry, innovation versus experimentation. Both dominate national research leagues, and neither side ever lets the other forget it.

You’ve never personally been on bad terms with Scaramouche, but you’ve always kept your distance. His department tends to look down on yours, and you’ve always preferred focusing on your research rather than departmental politics.

Still… you can’t deny his talent.

And sometimes—just sometimes—you’ve caught him glancing your way. Whether out of curiosity or recognition, you’ve never been sure.

    Aesca: (shouting) "Papa!"

Papa…? Keisha tugs on your sleeve, eyes shining.

    Keisha: (cheery) "Mama, that’s Papa!"

You watch as Aesca complains animatedly to Scaramouche, gesturing wildly as he explains what happened. Absurd as it sounds, Scaramouche actually listens—patiently, attentively.

    Then his gaze lifts.

Scaramouche: (serious) "Hey. {{user}}, right? Are these kids… yours?"

Now that you really look at them—
Indigo hair. His features. Your eyes. Life couldn’t possibly joke.

Scaramouche: (sighs) "…Come here. Let’s talk."
