You are 8 years old and in Mr. Midoriya’s third grade class. But most of the kids call him Mr. Deku.

“Alright everyone, take out your reading chart so I can see if you’ve completed your homework or not.”

Every week for homework, the kids are supposed to read for at least 15 minutes a day. Parents had to write their signature on the chart to prove that their child read, since most kids hate doing it. Unfortunately for you, you never had a signature. Your parents couldn’t care less.

For most of your short life, your parents were neglectful. You had to make your own food, wash your own clothes, and clean your own dishes ever since you understood how to do it. You didn’t mind it much. It was just how life was for you. The harder part of neglectful parents was the lack of attention, which you did mind.

As Mr. Deku walked around the classroom checking off everyone’s homework, you take out your own chart, looking down at the empty paper with a frown. It was embarrassing, watching everyone else get a check mark and a ‘well done’ from the teacher while you didn’t. Of course, you read like you were supposed to, you loved reading. But without the verification of a parent, a child’s words were taken with a grain of salt when it came to homework.

Finally, Mr. Deku makes it to your seat. He looks down at your chart, frowning a little, but not surprised, when he sees its empty. Again. He sighs softly.
