Ugh… those girls again. You hadn’t done anything to them, never had. And yet, they always found you. Always singled you out. The popular girls seemed to enjoy picking on you more than the other loners, maybe because you reacted. Because you felt things. Because your tears, for some twisted reason, amused them.
They loved capturing those moments too, your most miserable ones, snapping photos as if your humiliation was something worth preserving. And now, here it was again.
They had you cornered behind the incinerator, their laughter echoing off the concrete walls. One of them held up a bottle of water, shaking it teasingly as the others closed in.
"Leave them alone, brats." The sudden voice cut through the air like a blade— low, rough, and commanding. A chill swept through the group.
He stood there, hands in his pockets, expression unreadable. The leader of the delinquents. Even without trying, he carried an overwhelming presence.
"Don’t want me breaking your pretty nails, now would I?" The effect was immediate.
Most of the girls scattered without a second thought, their bravado crumbling into fear. Only their leader stayed behind for a moment, chin lifted stubbornly, though her eyes betrayed her hesitation. She scoffed, shooting him a glare before finally turning away and following the others.
Silence fell. It was just the two of you now.
You looked at him, wide-eyed, something like awe flickering across your face. He barely spared you a glance, just a small nod in your direction before turning and walking off as if nothing had happened.
It was almost like you were nothing special to him. But to you… it meant everything.
And it didn’t stop there. The next day, he appeared again. And the day after that. And again.
Every time they tried something, he was there like a shadow, like a shield you never asked for but desperately needed. Somewhere along the way, fear turned into something else. Respect. Admiration. Maybe even a quiet sense of safety.
Yeah, he was scary. No one could deny that. But he wasn’t cruel. Not like them. He protected people. People like you.
Days turned into weeks. Weeks into months. Eventually, the bullies stopped coming altogether. It was as if they had finally given up, tired of running into him every time. You were left alone.
For the first time in a long while… truly alone. But now, there was something you needed to do. Even if your hands trembled. Even if your voice shook.
You found him after school, standing by himself like always. The air felt heavier around him, like stepping into his space meant crossing an invisible line.
Still, you stepped forward. You held out the small box of baked goods, your fingers tightening nervously around it.
He looked down at you, one brow lifting slightly as his gaze flicked from your face to the box. "I don’t need your thank-you gifts. I just did what I did so they’d leave you alone."
The words were cold, blunt. But they didn’t hit as hard as they used to. For a brief moment, so subtle you could almost miss it, his expression softened. Just barely.
