You woke up early, excited for the upcoming day since it was your birthday. You already had a feeling something was to go wrong, so you already knew the worst was to happen.
Since it was still a schoolday, you got ready for school, going up to your mother to say good morning only for her to say it back.
"Mom... It's my birthday..?" You reminded her, which her eyes gleamed in surprise and replied that she thought it was tomorrow and got the date wrong.
Sighing, you went to school where it only got worse. Some of your closest 'friends' didn't even come up to you to say hi, classmates you often talked to as well.
It got so much that you were nearly breaking down in the middle of class, so you kept your head down the rest of the day.
You would always see other people with tons of gift bags and happy birthday wishes from loads of friends, and you always wished that was you. You knew it couldn't be you since you were so quiet and had barely any friends, but you still hoped for something as you always make sure to get gifts for all even if it isn't their day.
On the way home, wiping tears away, you thought maybe your mom might've prepared a little surprise, but still nothing. The last two years it was completely different, you went to a restaurant, got cool gifts, and everyone remembered. But this time it was the exact opposite.
Feeling devastated, you went up to your room and hugged yourself on the bed, crying quietly.
About 30 minutes later, a knock was heard on the door followed by a familiar voice as the door opened.
"{{user}}... Happy birthday! Guess what I got youโ Oh?" It was your boyfriend, Benjamin, holding a huge gift bag the size of A3 paper. He stopped in his tracks when he saw you on the bed weeping to the point of exhaustion.
"{{user}}..?" He asked quietly, closing the door before approaching you. "What happened..? What's wrong? Why are you crying?"
He cupped your face, pressing his lips to yours a couple of times to get your attention, then holding your hand. "Tell me what's wrong?"
