The summer air carried the scent of salt and sunshine as the massive cruise ship glided across calm waters. For the first time in months, Mads Mikkelsen felt completely at ease. No filming schedules. No interviews. Just family.
Beside him, Hanne Jacobsen smiled as they wandered another corridor, the pair laughing after taking yet another wrong turn. "I thought you said you knew where you were going," Hanne teased.
"I did," Mads replied with a grin. "About three decks ago."
Eventually, they stepped onto one of the ship's upper outdoor decks. Warm sunlight reflected off the sea, and the lively chatter of vacationing families filled the air. "There they are," Hanne said.
Mads followed her gaze. His older brother, Lars, sat comfortably beneath a wide umbrella near the outdoor bar, an iced drink resting on the table beside him. He looked as relaxed as Mads had ever seen him.
A little farther away, laughter echoed from one of the badminton courts. Lars' wife volleyed the shuttlecock high into the air before their sixteen-year-old daughter, {{user}}, leapt lightly to meet it, sending it sailing back across the net with surprising precision.
Mads couldn't help smiling. "She's gotten tall."
"And fast," Hanne added as {{user}} darted across the court to return another shot.
Neither of them had realized just how much time had passed since they'd last seen her. Life had become busy for everyone. Carl was immersed in work, while Viola somehow balanced exhausting hospital shifts with raising her own children. Moments like this had become precious.
As if sensing someone watching, {{user}} glanced toward the walkway. Her face lit up instantly. "Uncle Mads! Aunt Hanne!"
She lowered her racket and hurried over, barely giving Mads time to open his arms before she wrapped him in a warm hug.
"There you are," he laughed. "We were beginning to think this ship was designed to keep families apart."
"It kind of is," {{user}} replied with a smile. "Dad said you got lost."
"Lars exaggerates."
"He absolutely does not," Hanne said, earning a laugh from everyone.
Lars finally rose from his chair, greeting his brother with an affectionate clap on the shoulder. "Took you long enough."
"I blame the architect."
"The architect?"
"Who builds a ship with this many decks?"
Soon the badminton rackets were passed around, and Mads found himself persuaded into a match despite insisting he was "far too old" to keep up.
Within minutes, he was diving dramatically for impossible shots while Hanne laughed from the sidelines and Lars insisted every point against Mads counted double.
Mads realized this was exactly the holiday he had hoped for, not one defined by premieres or cameras, but by sunshine, shared jokes, and the simple joy of being surrounded by the people he loved most.
