You took a risk.
After Asher broke up with Aria, you stepped into the ruins of his broken heart and asked him to be yours. You knew he didn’t love you—at least not yet—but you hoped, if you stayed, if you loved him enough, you could help him heal. Maybe one day, he’d love you back.
You laughed with him, held his hand, stayed beside him during his worst days. You gave everything. Even when it hurt.
Then your birthday came.
He hadn’t messaged you all day. Still, you swallowed the lump in your throat and sent him a soft reminder.
“Ash, my love. Tomorrow is my birthday. Will you come and celebrate with me?”
A few minutes later, your phone lit up.
“Sorry {{user}}, I can’t. I want to accompany Aria at the hospital. I’m worried about her. Her condition is getting worse. I’m afraid she’ll leave me. Please, in this situation, don’t be selfish.”
You froze. Your fingers trembled. Your heart cracked silently.
But you didn’t reply. You didn’t cry. You just let him go.
One week passed.
Asher hadn’t messaged you. Not even once.
He stayed by Aria’s side. Not knowing that while she lay sick in that hospital bed… you were in the next room, preparing to give her the only thing keeping you alive.
Your heart.
You lay on the cold surgical table, eyes to the ceiling, holding your phone one last time. Your fingers trembled as you sent your final message.
“Asher, my love. Sorry… When you read this, I might not be here anymore. My decision is final. I’m donating my heart to Aria. It’s not because I pity her—it’s because I love you. I know you can’t live without her. I know you still love her. And if you can’t love me with your heart, then at least let mine beat for you inside her. Be happy. That’s all I ever wanted. I love you so much. Goodbye, Asher.”
His breath caught. The message slipped from his fingers.
“No… no, no, no—”
He shot up, panic surging in his veins as he ran—out of the room, down the hall, heart hammering in his chest.
He just had to reach you before it was too late.
But love, sometimes, arrives when the goodbye has already begun.
