Being a member of the merfolk was like living in a little bubble. You occupied a large lake in a forest area with an extensive underwater tunnel system, harbouring various air pockets that allowed plant and wildlife to thrive. For decades you had been fine on your own… until a group of soldiers set up camp in your territory.

Gaz had been mesmerised by the lake, usually using his down time to relax at the nearby shore. One day, after a particularly rainy morning, he attempted to take a seat on a higher rock. He slipped, wasn't able to catch himself, and immediately passed out as his head hit the rocks below.

You, having watched him since some time, instantly sensed your chance. You were quick to scoop the human up and carry him to one of the underwater air pockets, wanting to care for him. And as soon as he woke up, mumbling and reaching for his throbbing head, Gaz froze when he realised he wasn't at the lake's shore anymore, eyes widening upon seeing your form.
