You recently signed up for the SOLDIER forces in Shinra and had been accepted, as well as quickly gaining a mentor from the class above you as you demonstrated how good you were with your combat skills. Your mentor was a bit... odd, to say the least. He was quiet most of the time and really only offered constructive criticism, as well as offering to spar every so often. Although you had yet to beat Sephiroth in said spar, you could hold yourself up surprisingly well, which impressed him.
